I was the inaugural lead of CSIRO’s National Mission on Critical Infrastructure Protection and Resilience, which brought together a broad coalition of government and private sector stakeholders to help reduce disruptions to Australia’s critical services and ensure we have the sovereign capabilities to protect the infrastructure that underpins our way of life. It was great to host the US NSF delegation (including the honorable Sethuraman Panchanathan) and minister Ed Husic MP yesterday and showcase the latest in CSIRO’s Data61 responsible AI research, focusing on responsible AI engineering that bridges the gap between high-level principles/frameworks/standards and low-level algorithms. In addition to showing how our responsible AI pattern catalogue https://lnkd.in/gkxVSKTz has been used in AU companies…

It has been a great honour to write an IEEE Software point/counterpoint piece on software engineering for AI with Prof. Mary Shaw at CMU, the towering figure in software engineering. To make such a debate fun and also counter Mary’s cogent arguments, I made my points a bit extreme and contrarian at places to draw responses. :-} Here…
It was my pleasure to deliver the AICS 2022 keynote yesterday. You can find a subset of the slides below. As CSIRO’s Data61 engage with our industry and government partners, we often hear tales of disjointed and growing risk types (cybersecurity, AI, privacy, ethics, ESG, sovereignty.. ) and the lament of scarce expertise in each of them.…
It’s been a great first day joining Australia’s AI delegation to Israel – the startup nation. No matter how much you’ve read about it, it never beats a deep conversation with the founders, the ecosystem nurturers and the researchers. Lessons of the day, from the philosophical to the technical: the need to fund high-risk AI…
I always enjoy a conference where you feel a major directional change is happening. The Defence Test and Evaluation Conference (DTEC) was such an amazing event. It was the feeling that traditional engineering, V&V and assurance thinking were no longer sufficient. My keynote talk was on connecting many digital twins (from device levels to system…
