Very proud to see the Industry Data Classification Framework released, following significant work by my team at CSIRO in partnership with the Department of Home Affairs and industry organisations across Australia.

A key idea behind the framework is that good data governance is about more than protecting data. By understanding the value, sensitivity and appropriate handling of different data, organisations can use and share it with greater confidence, and unlock more value from it.

This is increasingly important for AI. Trustworthy AI depends substantially on trustworthy data: knowing what data you have, its value and sensitivity, where it can be used, and what protections are required. In that sense, the IDCF is relevant not only to cybersecurity, but also to enabling responsible data-driven and AI innovation.

We are very interested in working with industry partners to apply the framework to real-world challenges, understand the practical barriers to adoption, and explore new data and AI innovations that can be built on top of it.
