Zoho Fireside Chat on AI

I never imagined I would one day share a speaking session โ€” and a speaker room chat โ€” with the ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ด๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜† ๐—”๐˜‚๐˜€๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐—ฐ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ธ๐—ฒ๐˜ ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ ๐—ช๐—ฎ๐˜‚๐—ด๐—ต. Thanks to the Zoho event in Sydney, that happened. Speaking right after Hugh Watson Australia’s Ambassador for Cyber Affairs and Critical Technology also added a valuable global perspective to the discussion.

In my fireside chat, I reflected on our journey helping develop Australiaโ€™s AI safety standard: ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—ด๐˜‚๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—ฆ๐— ๐—˜๐˜€ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—”๐—œ ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ผ๐˜†๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜ ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜ ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—น๐˜† ๐—ณ๐—ถ๐˜๐˜€ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—”๐˜‚๐˜€๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฒ๐˜…

On adoption barriers, we discussed an inconvenient truth: AI adoption is everywhere at the individual level โ€” from personal life to employees secretly experimenting or building tools for colleagues in unsanctioned ways. Yet it struggles to bubble up to the business level.

I do believe AI assurance and testing are critical for broad adoption. But the real challenge is this: how do we harness the innovation power of individuals without being paralysed by fear?

One way forward is sensible evaluation before deployment, backed by strong post-deployment monitoring and assurance. At CSIRO’s Data61, we are developing such a balanced approach that spreads risk management across DevOps pipelines rather than relying solely on large upfront risk assessments. That means: resisting the urge to make systems โ€œperfectโ€ before release, because this wave of GenAI wonโ€™t wait.

Finally, I was asked how I personally use AI. The timing couldnโ€™t be better โ€” this Friday Iโ€™ll deliver the second instalment of my talk at another APS event, building on my recent (slightly controversial) reflections in ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—”๐—ด๐—ฒ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—”๐—œ. This time, Iโ€™ll go even further, tackling a more challenging topic โ€” ๐—ช๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—”๐—ด๐—ฒ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐—”๐—œ โ€” where Iโ€™ll make another controversial point. Stay tuned.
