Representing Australia in the Global Effort for AI Safety

It has been a great honour to represent Australia on the Expert Advisory Panel for the International AI Safety Report, led by Joshua Bengio and backed by over 30 countries and international organisations including the EU, OECD and UN.

This is the most important ongoing effort to monitor AI capability gains and safety risks of AI—anchored in solid scientific evidence, rigorous debate, and international consensus. To recognise the rapid pace of development, we are introducing additional key updates throughout the year, complementing the annual report.

Thanks to the high-quality input from other Australian experts and the support from the Department of Industry, Science and Resources, Australia’s perspectives have been well reflected in the report.

As with any consensus-driven and evidence-based process, some early and more speculative indicators remain under active discussion. We will continue to monitor these closely as the evidence base evolves.

I will be sharing key findings and additional insights from this work in upcoming talks and reflecting them in CSIRO’s Data61 research on safe and responsible AI.
