AI Leadership Summit Panel – Powering Productivity with Generative AI

The biggest AI leadership day in Australia, during AI month! ๐ŸŒŸ
I participated in a panel on ‘Powering Productivity with Generative AI’. Here are my main messages:

– Like car brakes enable cars to run faster and with confidence, responsible AI is crucial for accelerating AI technology adoption. Australia may not create the fastest or largest AI models, but it can build the most trusted AIs. ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ

– AI should be used not only for productivity gains and efficiency but also for innovation. At CSIRO’s Data61, we’re developing an AI copilot for science. If AI can be trusted for scientific discovery, it sets a high standard for other critical societal applications. ๐Ÿš€

– Provocatively speaking, don’t view ‘human-in-the-loop’ as the sole answer to AI risks and trust issues. No one wants to be a ‘liability sponge’ or ‘accountability token’, constantly checking AI results. As leaders, our role is to strategize long-term, enforce values, and make contextual trade-offs, not to constantly verify team work. Think of human’s new role in that light. Thus, humans should assume roles like ethics steward or context validator, setting guardrails and embracing new, meaningful responsibilities. ๐Ÿงญ

– Finally, Australia can be a powerhouse for AI innovation, leveraging our top science and engineering talent, not just consumers or adopters of AI. ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿค–
