To the Startup Nation – Israel

It’s been a great first day joining Australia’s AI delegation to Israel – the startup nation. No matter how much you’ve read about it, it never beats a deep conversation with the founders, the ecosystem nurturers and the researchers. Lessons of the day, from the philosophical to the technical: the need to fund high-risk AI R&D, failed ventures sprout green shoots of new ventures, focus on technologies that can pivot from domain to domain, the role of large companies in market access for SME/startups, the importance of domain expert credibility, sacrificing model accuracy for explainability to get human experts buy-ins and the frontier challenges being in AI engineering and MLOps. CSIRO’s Data61
